Swingtown

There was a show on a couple of years ago called Swingtown and while I loved it for it's trashy storylines, it wasn't called Swingtown for nothin', I loved it more for the set and costume designs. The suburban homes were so much like the ones from my childhood and the clothes made it look like our family photo circa 1978 but way more stylish (sorry, mom). There was this one character that was kind of the bad girl who was always throwing parties with porn stars or swinging with her husband but the best part of her character was her clothes. She was SO chic with her short, sassy haircut and when she wasn't in a bathing suit or her birthday suit, she would have on some great floaty dress or cute little romper. Sadly the show was cancelled after only one season (did she sleep with the best friend's husband or not??) but her wardrobe lives on in my brain so when I saw this dress from Victoria's Secret, it immediately reminded me of something she would wear.

It's not overtly retro or anything but just has that vibe and I loved it so much that I bought it and even paid to have it altered because I'm elf height. I wanted to see what else was out there that had this cool 70s, kimono style and here's what I found.

This is from Piperlime and is kind of a modern take on things. It's still slouchy and sexy, but it's just a V so no wrap and it's REALLY short so I would throw it over leggings or tights unless you have legs like this and then rock on.

This is a true kimono dress from YesStyle. The detailing at the waist is really pretty and makes this very flattering.

I don't normally like Anthropologie ( I know, I know) but this is really cute and I love that it has a bit more structure without looking stiff. The pattern is great, too.

If you're not into dresses, this coat from The Limited is a nice alternative.

Another option is an open kimono cardigan like this from Forever 21. Belt it or don't. I'm wearing one right now and I feel very fancy.
